The little England and hill country

One of Sri Lanka’s most scenic destinations, the cool climes of the hill country provides a welcome getaway from the hot and arid climate experienced in other parts of the island with clear jagged waterfalls, tea plantations and breathtaking walks and landscapes dotted throughout the region.

The main hill resort of Sri Lanka and the heart of the tea industry is the town of Nuwara Eliya, otherwise known as ‘Little England,’ nestled at the foot of a mountain and surrounded by lush tea plantations. Once the summer retreat of the European planters, the town still exudes colonial charm with its English-style bungalows and structures.

The weather in the hill country remains cool all year around and activities include visits to tea plantations, golfing, horse riding, boating, hiking and of course exploring the beauty of the landscaped gardens, waterfalls and plateaus and of course, drinking tea in abundance.

The region also offers some excellent sightseeing options, namely World’s End and Baker’s Falls located in Horton Plains, another hotspot of Sri Lanka’s biodiversity and scaling the sacred mountain, Adam’s Peak.

The best way of enjoying one’s time in the hill country is by spending a couple of days on a tea plantation, many of which offer refurbished colonial bungalows for guests to stay in.
Dickoya, Bandarawela, Haputale and Ella are all quaint hill country towns and villages worth checking out and those who have travelled this uphill journey by train will confirm that it is one of the most enchanting train journeys in the world.
