Overview
Built in the Neo-Gothic architectural tradition in 1879, St. Stephen’s Church Negombo is an Anglican Church that stands at an elevated site, which was originally a bastion of the Dutch Fort.

Passers-by on the road bordering the lagoon could see a beautiful image of the church reflected in the still waters of the lagoon, a rare sight, indeed, for a church building.

The stained glass windows above the exquisitely carved wooden altar provide a comforting church interior. An account of the consecration as given in a supplement to the Ceylon Diocesan Gazette of 2 August 1879 mentions: “The church stands in a commanding position on the summit of a mound, overlooking the Kachcheri and the Assistant Government Agent’s House. The exterior is simple, but very neat and pleasing, with a small stone cross at each end of the ridge-tiles. The interior, including a small chancel measures 64ft. 9in. by 24ft. It well lighted and aired by numerous windows. On this occasion it was tastefully decorated with flowers moss and evergreens, the altar and chancel being especially pleasing.”
