Overview

Surf’s Up at Arugam Bay, famously known as one of the best three locations for surfing this destination is unique as it offers you more than just surfing. It offers you everything that Sri Lanka is known for, such as ancient monuments, wildlife, golden beaches and marine life all in a very beautiful coastal town. Located in the east coast Arugam Bay is a tourist destination which does not offer you modern facilities like other coastal towns in the South of Sri Lanka however its unspoilt beauty makes it a top destination for surfers and beach lovers alike.

Between April and October the waves in Arugam Bay make it a sanctuary for all surfers has it contains over ten great surf points. It is also a location for local and international surfing competitions. In addition the ocean is also perfect for just swimming and snorkeling. For those looking for Sri Lankan wildlife the Lahangala wild life sanctuary is known for its majestic elephants. For bird lovers the Kumana bird sanctuary offers you some rare species and birds that have migrated from far off places like Siberia to escape the harsh winter conditions.

For some adventure take a jeep safari around the sand dunes of Panama or Pottuvil.  For the history buffs Arugam Bay also is home to ancient monuments. The Kudumbigala archeological reserve has monastic caves from the 12th century AD. South of Arugam Bay and believed to be made famous in “Sinbad the Sailor tales” is the Okanda temple devoted to Lord Skanda. In the Pottuvil town are monuments related to the Southern Kingdom of Magama which are about a thousand years old built in respect to the mother of King Dutugamunu.

Arugam Bay suffered from the devastating effects of the Tsunami and therefore it is not the most modern surfing city. Although it is developing slowly accommodation is cheap but not luxurious and it has a very relaxed night life with a few local beach bars. However there is something magnetic about Arugam Bay that keeps drawing repeated visitors and it is the only surfing destination that offers the wonders of Sri Lankan wild life and history all at close proximity to the sensuous ocean.
