Overview
Athamala Falls is so named as an elephant is said to have died after being swept along in the powerful water, which tumbles down an impressive 52 metre drop. The area surrounding the fall is alive with wildlife, particularly birds, whose songs mingle with the sound of the rushing water.
Situated near Akurassa town in the Matara District (in the Pitibaddara Divisional Secretariat Pavuruthota village’s GS area). If approaching from Morawaka town, head towards Neluwa for five km to Ethu Ela junction. Turn left and continue for another three km. If approaching from Akurassa town, take the Siyambalagoda Road to Pitabaddara town. From here it is a further 14 km to the Ethu Ela junction, at which turn right and continue for three km.
