Overview

Feel the cool climate of the Sri Lankan hills with a trip to Bandarawela. Located in the Badulla district it has extreme lush forests and tranquil tea estates all around. Today it has become a tourist attraction. Bandarawela boasts of a rich colonial history with excellent roads and infrastructure. It is the perfect place for large families as well as the honeymoon couple who want to get away for a quiet relaxing getaway.

Bandarawela was a highly sought off place during the time of the British rule in Sri Lanka and the influence of the British can be seen in the stately colonial architecture. The abundance of tea as well as the serene cool climate not to mention the lush vegetation made it a favorite retreat for the British during the 19th century. It was also the camp for Boer prisoners of war who constructed buildings which are still seen today.
The hills offer the tourist with plenty of attractions. Tea estates offer visits where one can see how Sri Lanka’s main export is picked and created into the tea leaves with a visit to the plantations and its adjoining factories. It is also home to some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Sri Lanka such as the Diyaluma and Rawana waterfalls. The amazing climate is maintained right throughout the year so Bandarawella and its attractions can be visited anytime of the year. Due to its lush forestation and nature it is a famous place to go hiking or cycling for all the adventurous types. Some of the most beautiful walking trails are located here. This colonial town is relaxing and its many hotels offer the traveler all comforts however one cannot expect a bustling night life as it a peaceful serene town.
Bandarawela also in addition to its British colonial architecture also has some heritage sites which are well worth a visit such as the Dhowa Buddhist rock temple. Some famous churches such as St Anthony’s church and the Methodist church are all well worth a visit.
With its cool climate, lush vegetation, rich colonial history and serene atmosphere Bandarawella is one of the most sought after destinations in Sri Lanka.
