The wetland system ensures that there is a rich variety of birds that visit. It is said that as much as 197 species of birds visit Bundala each year including several species of the migratory water fowl which is why Bundala National Park is Sri Lanka’s first “Ramsar” wetland. Between October and March over 10 000 shore birds feed and birds come from as far as Siberia to escape the bitter cold. The abundance of food from the lagoon makes an important feeding ground.
