Overview

In the past few years Kalpitiya has now boomed into becoming one Sri Lanka’s hot destinations. This has been mainly due to the extreme abundance of dolphins that are spotted in this area. Kalpitiya lies north of Colombo and is surrounded by the sea on one side and the lagoon on the other. There are many islands in the area which have formed within both sea and lagoon. Some of these islands are covered with mangroves these mangroves are said to be very rare and even if the botanist in you isn’t titillated by this the beauty of the vegetation will definitely leave you in awe.

These islands have also been a feast for local and migratory birds. During November to March it is possible to see different species of birds especially those who have escaped from the bitter cold winter conditions of their home country. For the bird lover and wildlife photographer it is not possible to not be impressed with the variety of species that you can find here.

The most important thing that Kalpitiya is famous for is the marine life. A trip into the sea can leave you viewing plenty of tropical fish. There are also many coral formations that are found in the shallow waters in different colours and formations. Without sailing into the deep seas it is possible to come up close and personal with dolphins. They are quite tame and come quite close to the boat. They also jump and play with each other and are definitely a treat to see. Dolphins are not the only fish you can see. Kalpitiya is also the destination to see whales and all types of sea turtles that come to the shore to lay their eggs.

Other attractions that are close to Kalpitiya are the Wilpattu wildlife sanctuary famous for its elephants and leopards and the ancient city of Anuradhapura. You can also visit a wonder of the world Sigiriya. The area around is very quiet and it is not a modern city in any means. Enjoy the bar reef marine sanctuary, lagoons, mangroves and the bird life in Kalpitiya.
