Overview

Colombo is the most modern city in Sri Lanka. It is a vibrant bustling modern city with luxurious hotels, malls and a rich night life yet it has not lost its old charm which still remains in its colonial buildings and architecture as well as its patchwork of different cultures. A trip to Colombo can give you fine dining, nightlife, malls, five star hotels all within a few minutes from the beaches of Galle Face and Mount Lavinia.

As Colombo contains a natural harbor it was invaded by many countries in its rich history including the Dutch, Portuguese and finally the British. The remnants of these three nations can be found in Colombo today in some of its colonial buildings, customs and food. Colombo gained its Independence in 1948 and comprises of Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and Burghers.
Colombo is no way a sleepy city and there are plenty of things to do day and night with many places of cultural interest. Learn about the history of Sri Lanka by visiting the Colombo museum. Pay a visit to the Gangarama Buddhist temple which often houses a tusker elephant.  In addition a must see is a trip down to Pettah which is Sri Lanka’s version of China town. It has many shops, trinkets as well as hawker stalls. Down in Pettah you can also find many colonial buildings and the very famous Red Mosque. As the sun sets one must visit the very unique and famous Galle Face Hotel which is the oldest hotel in Sri Lanka and a favorite of the British Royal family. The terrace of the hotel overlooking the Indian Ocean is a favorite place to have high tea. Another famous hotel is the Mount Lavinia hotel which is also a historical landmark and architectural wonder. Built by the British Governor in the 19th Century for his slave lover Lavinia it is now a beach front hotel. Colombo has a host of fine dining restaurants serving local and international cuisine no matter what your palate is after. In addition there are pubs and night clubs for those looking to party into the night.
Colombo although small has everything a modern city
