Overview
The fall originates from a tributary of the Rakwana River, which flows down the eastern slope of Suriyakande Mountain, in the Sinharaja forest reserve. The water courses over rock-strewn terrain and at times the flow is submerged by rocky outcrops. This profusion of rocks gives the fall its name (‘dola’ means rock pool).
Gal Dola Falls is situated at the 82nd mile post near Rakwana, on the Ratnapura-Pelmadulla road. Rakwana rest-house is just three km away.
Sri Lanka is blessed with many breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls and the largest number is located in the Ratnapura District, where there are over 100 waterfalls. Be sure to see some in the cool climes of Nuwara Eliya too, where the water crashing down in all its beauty is guaranteed to enthral.
Sri Lanka’s waterfalls have interesting names and stories behind them, which are mostly related to folklore and legends, which make for interesting bits of information.
