Overview

Ampara is a very remote city on the east coast of Sri Lanka. It is pretty much directly across the country from the capital and is almost 350 kilometers from Colombo.

Ampara is not just a town but it is also part of Ampara district. The area took a severe beating from the Tsunami in 2004 leaving nothing but a shell after the incident.  However time has gone by and the city and surrounding areas have picked itself up very respectably and admirably.
Around and about the city you will see paddy fields green and beautiful, the occasional lake and lots of palm groves around. The Gal Oya national park is not too far from here and acts a base for some visitors who visit the park. As the area was one of the most affected by the Tsunami there is a lot of NGO’s present in the city. This city has many foreign relief workers who have been based in the area for over the six years now rebuilding and reshaping the city and surrounding areas. Even though the areas affected are by the beach the NGO staff live and reside in Ampara, which is the main hub for transport
Ampara although has never been known for its tourism is a very unique place to visit in the paradise isle. Attractions in Amapara are Deegawapi Temple, Irrakamam famous for its wild life and the beautiful reservoir Senanayaka Samudra. The beaches of Olluvil are famous for its rare tropical fish. Amapara is very rich in its wild life and some of the wild life parks offer its guest the best in game viewing and bird watching. The district of Ampara is famous for its bird life and off shore migratory birds that come here to feed.
Ampara has been damaged through the effects of the tsunami and the civil war. It is not very developed at all and there are no five star hotels or bars or nights clubs and besides temples, wild life and the beaches there is not much to do around here, however it has a charm of its own and is definitely worth a visit.
