Golfing in Sri Lanka

Although relatively unknown in the sport of golf, Sri Lanka boasts three of the finest 18-hole golf courses in Asia and the sport also has a long history in the island dating back to the late 1800s.
The three golf courses are located in Colombo, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, with the elevations and climatic conditions in each location differing to the extent that some golfers often state that it is like playing in three different countries.

The oldest golf club in Sri Lanka, the Royal Colombo Golf Club is situated in the heart of Colombo and is considered the most formal of the three. The 5770 metre golf course offers challenges through its many water hazards and bunkers which can test even seasoned players. Dating back to the Colonial era, its clubhouse as well as that of the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, continues to exude an old world charm.
Located in the cool climes in the heart of the tea country, the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, a 5520 metre course features fir lined fairways, bunkers and scenic surroundings with rivers coming into play on six holes.

The Victoria Golf and Country Resort, ensconced within the central highlands of the country, near the hill capital of Kandy, boasts a breathtakingly beautiful course, encircled by waters of the Victoria reservoir and bordered by mountains. It also offers the best playing conditions with its moderate temperatures which vary between 20-30ºC.

Golfing in Sri Lanka is relatively laid-back and day members are welcome at all three courses. Green fees are relatively inexpensive when compared to international standards and there are also some fun tournaments each year for amateurs.
