Overview
This group of seven natural hot springs lies off the Anuradhapura-Trincomalee road in Kanniya. The hot springs are of varying temperatures and have tall walls built to separate them from each other and shorter bounding walls have been built around the springs to create wells so that the water can be used for bathing. The water from the wells is considered therapeutic and the use of them is controlled by the adjoining Mari Aman Kovil which holds the lease for them.

It is believed that King Ravana performed his mother’s last funeral religious rites at this place were the seven hot water spring are found at present. This practice of performing the last funeral rites still continues. At the same time the springs have has now become a tourist centre as so many hundreds of tourist flocked to bathe here.

According to the ‘Ramayana,’ Ravana, the adventurous and powerful King of Lanka, is reported to have been responsible for these hot wells springing forth. Some believe that these natural hot water springs hold therapeutic healing powers for ailments such as arthritis and rheumatism, thus it is a common sight to see people clamouring to have a soothing warm water well bath here.
