Overview
Built by the Portuguese when they invaded Jaffna, the Jaffna Fort has served as a military camp for the colonising Dutch and British and is now occupied by the Sri Lanka Army.
The fort came under attack several times during the war fought between the State and with LTTE terrorists and still retains reminders of the bitter battles fought in the peninsula.
The fort has now undergone renovation and some parts are accessible to visitors. It is ideal if you visit the fort with a good guide in order to learn about recent battles, how the Army captured it and defended and to glean other interesting bits of information.
