Overview

A warm breeze, waving Palm trees, green tobacco fields and a serene ambience is what Jaffna is all about. This beautiful city that was once ravaged by the disasters of a civil war is now open to tourists that just can’t get enough. Unlike any other place in Sri Lanka Jaffna has an atmosphere of its own. The civil war has given Jaffna a new sense of character than what it was before. If not now more hauntingly beautiful Jaffna many has a compelling effect to everyone who visits.

Tourists are flocking to Jaffna now, the sheer curiosity of a land that was once the battlefield between the LTTE and the government troops. The destruction and the trauma of war is very apparent, but development is now taking place at a gastronomical level and Jaffna is now beginning to show the first traces of an economic boom. Jaffna has many beautiful lagoons such as the Jaffna lagoon and Chundikkulam. There are also many islands such as Kayts and Neduntivu. Due to years of being untouched by the human world these beaches are beyond beautiful with amazing coral and marine life that can be found near the shore. Attractions in Jaffna are the famous Nallur Kovil which is a Hindu Kovil built in the 13th century and although it has been damaged by the many invasions it still stands proudly today and is one of the most significant temples in Jaffna. The Dutch Fort at Neduntivu is another attraction also known as the Delft, the wonders of the Dutch architecture lies in this fort. Another famous attraction is the Public library which was burnt down during the civil war but rebuilt in the same design.

Jaffna is still recovering from the spoils of war and it is in no way a modern city as yet. It has seen much tragic loss of life, buildings and much disaster which makes it a must see. Jaffna is unlike any other city it is beautiful and green and has been untouched by the human world for so long that it certain areas look virgin. It is definitely a place to be explored and visited by all.
