Overview

There is nothing as astounding as 35 commanding mountain peaks which rise above 900 metres in a clear blue sky. The view just described is none other than the Knuckles mountain range. The landscape of the mountain range is said to be the only highest collection of peaks in a single mountain range. The impressive factor is not only restricted to the mountain range alone, time and time again visitors have not failed to be amazed by Pitawala Patana.

Pitawala Patana is situated in the Matala district along the Rattota – Illukumbura Road. It a sprawling grassland  and is known to be by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) a rare type of grassland that actually came into being due to an ecological condition and is not present in any other part of the country. There is an evergreen forest that is on the outskirts of these grasslands but in general it is a vast stretch of green grassland that goes on for miles and miles.

The plains ends with a huge drop and glancing down below are definitely an exhilarating experience for those who dare try. However the beauty of the surrounding valley can only be experienced through this. The Pitawala Patana is also similar Horton Plains and World End which is also extensive plains with a never ending precipice.

Like all the other grass lands Pitawela Patana is rich in nature. Many types of birds can be found here as well as fauna and flora. Samba deer is said to graze in the grasslands and the clear streams have many species of fish including trout.

In addition to the nature of the ecological system Pitawala Patana is also renowned for two endemic species such as the frog known as Dumbara Galpara Mediya and the other is a very special type of grass known as Patan Ala. These grasslands are also famous for housing carnivorous plants that eat their prey by trapping insects. The soil in these plains does not have the required nutrients therefore the some of the plants have adapted to getting their nutrients through insects. One such plant is Kadulessa which catches its prey through serum.

Sri Lankan nature is something that is unique and Pitawela Patana is Sri Lankan plains at its very best.
