Overview
Passing the Royal Court of King Parakramabahu you can reach this pond made out of stone slabs. This tank has been used in the time of King Parakramabahu (1153-1186). On the side this tank there is remains of the changing rooms.
This pond is located in the area between the inner wall and the present watercourse beyond the audience hall, where the ladies of the court would have taken their evening dip. This may have belonged to King Parakramabahu’s royal park called Nandana Uyana. The bath comprises a pavilion and a toilet.
According to scholars this is one of the best examples of a royal bath. A long and narrow flight of stone steps from the eastern side of Parakramabahu’s citadel wall will lead you down to the area where the pond is constructed.
The bath is shaped in four tiers, the forth comprising the floor level. A flight of steps leads down to the paved floor of the bath on one side. Two gargoyles sprouts lead water into the bath, conducted through underground pipe lines from the canal nearby. An underground passage on the eastern side emptied the bath when necessary. A stone water lock on the east side of the bath acts as a water locking valve and an exit to used water.
