Overview

Kurunegala has been a famous Sri Lankan city from the ancient days throughout history. This is because the city has been a royal capital for over half a century. Kurunegala also has become such a hub in present day due to its strategic location where most main roads meet.

Kurunagala is one of Sri Lanka’s busiest cities and is considered to be a fairly wealthy city. When driving through it you may easily make the mistake of thinking you were in Colombo or down a busy street in a market as the commercial aspect of kurunagala is huge. Starting from Vehicle sales to which people flock from all across the country, and Clothing shops once again where people from all areas come to do their shopping the area is usually busy and crowded.

Kurunagala is a place rich in history and therefore all tourists should visit Ehtugala a large black rock and the ancient tank. The Ethugala climb, Dambadeniya, Arankale Forest, Ridi Vehara and the old railway stations are the major attractions.

Kurunagala is also famous for its gemstones. Kurunagala has the most number of gem merchants in Sri Lanka and is known to be the place to go if interested in purchasing or selling valuable stones in addition to Ratnapura.

Kurunegala is a very typically tropical city, hot and humid throughout the year and the fact that the city is surrounded by rocks play a huge role in retaining the heat within the city.  Kurunegala has very quickly become one of the most popular shopping destinations for the locals. For the province and even surrounding provinces Kurunegala has become the big city so to speak and has seen an inflow of local tourists like never before. Kurunegala is a city with abundant paddy fields green and lush and where there is no paddy field you will see coconut plantations.  As a tourist looking for entertainment such as bars and nightclubs you will find none. There are local taverns but they are usually not very comfortable and women do not frequent these places due to cultural norms. Kurunagala is developing in its infrastructure and its commercial facilities and the lush vegetation as well as its historical importance makes it an important place to visit.
