Overview
Madunagala Hot Springs is a wonderful creation of nature in all its natural beauty. Historically, these hot springs flowed into a natural water hole. The reason being that these thermal waters contain medicinal properties to cure ailments like skin eruptions and other rheumatic pains. Even the ancients, particularly the Buddhist monks living in ancient cave hermitages, had made the best use of these healing hot springs for body and skin ailments.
The famed literary scholar cum Assistant Government Agent – Leonard Woolf (1908-11) of Hambantota District, in his printed diaries had mentioned the arduous trek how he had hacked through the dense jungle to reach Mahapelessa (Madunagala) hot springs after crossing the Walawe River by boat.
They are unique in that, even during long rainy spells, the springs bubble at a rate of 68 cubic meters per second and there are five such hot springs here. Recently they have been renovated and attractive stone tanks and basins have been created. Here, the hot water bubbles into the ponds and mixes with cooler water there. Warm water flows smoothly into the surrounding basins where visitors can enjoy the soothing mineral water. Changing rooms, Western toilets and small shops with snacks and beverages are close by.
