The most crucial place to visit in the park in none other than the the Minneriya Tank, built in during the 3rd century AD by King Mahasena. During the months June to September this is the best place to see elephants as they come to bathe and find food during the dry season. It is also the best place for the keen bird watcher because a wide variety of birds such as the cormorant, painted stork, great white pelican, gray herons that come to fish in the waters. Other birds to look out for are the Sri Lankan Jungle Fowl, Hanging Parrot, Babbler and Hornbill which are endemic to Sri Lanka.Minneriya Tank is known to be the largest tank in Sri Lanka and this national park is home to a vast bio diversity of life such as nine species of amphibians, 25 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles, endangered fish and 160 species of birds as well as a range of butterflies.

The area around Minneriya is quiet because of its wild life heritage and there is not many other forms of activities besides the jungle safari, however it is close to Habarana which is known for its five star hotels and spas and Polannaruwa and Anuradhapura the ancient kingdoms which offer you sightseeing into Sri Lanka’s glorious past.
