Overview

Beruwala is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Sri Lanka. Its luxury resorts, golden beaches and handicrafts make it the perfect beach holiday for tourists and locals. Beruwala also have a few other pleasures such as Buddhist temples, water sports and the Beruwala light house on Barberyn Island. A ten minute boat ride to this incredible island will leave you face to face with a wonderful tourist attraction which is the Beruwala Lighthouse. The island alone is a pleasure to the eye with its greenery and the views of the Indian Ocean as well as its peaceful ambience, the lighthouse is simply a pleasing addition to this green island known as Barberyn Island.

To reach the island one must take a boat ride which is roughly around ten minutes, if you are lucky you may end up with a glass bottom boat which will leave you in awe with the exotic marine life the Indian Ocean holds, the island is roughly around eight acres and is surrounded by thick vegetation. It is about 20 feet above sea level and gives out beautiful views of the surrounding ocean. It is covered with coconut trees, plumeria flowers, mango trees, cashew trees and grass. Avid bird lovers will take pleasure at the exotic migratory birds as well as Sri Lankan birds that have made Barbaryn Island their home. This island is the best place to meditate, or just take in the views and have a picnic.

The Beruwala Lighthouse is to this day still very much in excellent condition with a dedicated crew taking care of it. Built by the British in 1928, it stands a majestic 110 feet tall and definitely has a commanding presence in the island. It still functions as a lighthouse. Standing 50 feet above sea level on a cliff, hard rock’s surround it and protect it from the churning waves. The premises of the lighthouse are spotless and clean and a very well laid our gardens embellish the tower.

There are only four international lighthouses in Sri Lanka today, one being the Beruwala Lighthouse. All ships and boats going to the Maldives have to pass the Beruwala lighthouse which is one of their most important functions.
