Overview
Located in the Gampaha District, south-west of Sri Lanka, the Negombo Lagoon is a large estuarine lagoon that is fed by a number of small rivers and a canal.
Linked to the sea by a narrow channel to the north, near Negombo town, the lagoon is surrounded by a densely-populated region containing paddy fields, coconut plantations and grassland.
The land and water bodies around are used for fishing and agriculture. The lagoon has extensive mangrove swamps and attracts a wide variety of water birds including cormorants, herons, egrets, gulls, terns and other shorebirds, making it the perfect spot for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.
Fishermen based at the Negombo lagoon live in poverty along the water’s edge and rely mainly on their traditional knowledge of the seasons for their livelihood, using outrigger canoes carved out of tree trunks and nylon nets to bring in modest catches from September through till April.
For generations the lagoon has provided the fishermen with a plentiful supply of crabs, shrimps, lobsters, cuttle fish and many of the native species of fish.
