Overview

Looking for a coastal retreat that is close to Colombo and gives you the perfect blend of a quiet beach holiday with a little exciting night life then Negombo is the perfect place for you. Negombo was Sri Lanka’s first beach resort, located very close to the main international airport it is now a teething place filled with luxurious hotels, supermarkets and many restaurants and bars that line the streets.  It was the main export harbor for Cinnamon during the British era in Sri Lanka and many colonial buildings can still be seen today.

A famous attraction close to Negombo is the Munneswaran Hindu Temple which is a famous temple in Sri Lanka. It is one of the three significant temples in Sri Lanka For the history buffs out there visit the Dutch Fort and the Dutch canal which are well preserved and show you another side of this great city during days gone by. For the nature lover a trip to Muthurajavilla marsh lands is a must where plenty of birds such as storks and cormorants and reptiles such as crocodiles and water monitors can be seen. Also another must see is the Buddhist temple in Kelaniya which has some beautiful paintings depicting Buddha’s life. The Negombo lagoon is another place where one can relax with a drink near the serene waters and watch some fishing. Negombo is an important catholic area and therefore there are lots of beautiful churches and some colonial buildings which are preserved. Another activity famous in Negombo is its water sports which can really get your adrenaline going.
Negombo also has an active night life. Down Long Beach there are German, Italian, western and eastern restaurants that line up the street. After a full filling dinner, hit the pubs and clubs in the same area for some exciting night light before heading back to the hotel. Negombo is very much a modern little town with a lot of supermarkets and shops selling antiques, handicrafts and precious stones. An essence of Sri Lankan handicrafts can be found in this town. It also caters to the tourists and is a very hospitable area.
