Overview

Often known as “Little England” this cool climate located in the heart of Sri Lanka is Nuwara Eliya. Built entirely during the era of the British as planters retreat its architecture is completely British with their brick walls and Tudor style houses. With absolute stunning views of surrounding mountains, valleys and meadows the tranquil beauty of Nuwara Eliya cannot be missed. It has a cool climate that is welcome from the harsh tropical sun of Sri Lanka, in addition its gentle beauty of its greenery and nature is an experience that is a must to all who visit Sri Lanka.

Nuwara Eliya is the capital of the tea industry and therefore most of the tea plantations allow excursions into their estates where you can walk among the luxuriant tea bushes and learn about tea from its inception to its manufacturing and also enjoy a refreshing cup of tea among the quiet hills. Looking for adventure then take a hike in Victoria Gardens or go boating at Gregory’s Lake. A famous thing to do is go horse riding.

For the golfer Nuwara Eliya has one of the best Golf ranges such as The Nuwara Eliya Golf Club. Nuwara Eliya is also famous for its beautiful waterfalls that are endless such as Ramboda, Laksapahana and Devon Falls. Some of them are perfect for that cool dip. There are many hikes and nature trails that can be organized for you to enjoy the wonders of nature in the mountains. A little bit away from Nuwara Eliya is the national park Horton Plains that has the magnificent precipice known as World’s End. In addition there is the Baker’s Falls and hikes through the park where it’s possible to see Sambar and all sorts of birds.

Do not miss the Hakgala Botanical Gardens which are botanical gardens built in 1861 and said to be the only botanical gardens in the world at such an elevation. Its crucial exhibits are a 100 year old Monetary Cypress trees from California, Japanese Cedars, Himalayan Pines and English Oak.

Nuwara Eliya is a sleepy, quiet serene town; night life is nonexistent here although you do find a few English style pubs and bars. However with its great planter history, beautiful views and serene ambience makes it crucial destination to visit.
